Epilogue: The Usual Meeting
The final day began as the first had.
By the time Elena Voss reached the thirty-eighth floor, the building had arranged itself in anticipation.
She wore charcoal, her dark hair secured in its immaculate twist. Black Louboutins completed the figure of the sophisticated British chief executive who could silence a boardroom by removing her glasses.
Adrian arrived at eleven.
Mara looked up from reception. She wore black trousers, an ivory silk blouse and the red-suede Casadei Blades that had become part of her professional identity.
Directors associated their crisp metallic rhythm with approaching deadlines.
Adrian understood it differently.
“She’s expecting you,” Mara said.
Inside Elena’s office, Adrian folded his jacket upon the chair.
“Under the desk,” Elena instructed.
He descended into the familiar shadows. Elena sat and placed one Louboutin into his open palm.
At eleven fifteen, Mara knocked.
“Come in.”
She presented Copenhagen’s position. Nothing about the meeting appeared unusual.
Adrian extended one finger.
Mara’s Casadei found it.
She did not look down.
She no longer needed to.
The movement had become instinctive: a slight adjustment, the red-suede toe passing beside his hand, the chrome heel settling upon the offered finger with effortless accuracy.
Muscle memory.
Mara returned throughout the day with contracts, coffee and documents that could easily have been sent electronically. Every visit followed the same unacknowledged ritual.
Adrian offered his hand.
A chrome Blade found its place.
Sometimes Mara sat. Sometimes she stood before Elena’s desk, hands upon her hips. Occasionally she leaned forward to indicate a figure and then slowly straightened.
Her face never changed.
Her voice remained professional.
Only Elena’s knowing gaze acknowledged the private contest beneath them.
At five thirty, Mara entered for the final time carrying no folder.
“The car is downstairs.”
Elena closed her laptop. “Anything urgent?”
“Nothing that cannot wait.”
Mara came around the desk. Adrian’s hands appeared.
She stepped onto them without breaking stride, one Casadei finding each offered finger. She stood before Elena with her red hair shining in the fading light.
Elena rose.
For a moment, the two women faced one another above him: Elena in black Louboutins, mature and immaculately controlled; Mara in the red Casadei Blades, irresistible and still hungry for the power beneath her heels.
Elena touched Mara’s waist.
“Still trying to make him stop?”
“One day.”
“You’ve been saying that for months.”
Adrian’s fingers moved beneath the chrome heels.
Mara applied pressure without looking down.
Elena drew her closer and kissed her once, slowly and confidently.
Adrian remained beneath them.
Mara had acquired the power she craved.
Adrian had given it to her without ceasing to belong beneath Elena’s desk.
Elena had discovered that authority did not diminish when shared carefully. It multiplied.
Outside the office, reports moved between departments and directors congratulated themselves upon understanding the people who led them.
They understood nothing.
At last, Mara lifted the Casadeis. Elena withdrew her Louboutin. Adrian emerged and stood between them.
“Dinner?” Mara asked.
Elena collected her coat.
“I’ve made a reservation.”
“For three?”
Elena looked at them both.
“Obviously.”
They crossed the darkened executive floor together. Mara’s chrome heels announced every step. Elena’s red soles flashed beside them. Adrian walked between the two women, carrying the final impressions of their stilettos in his palms.
Behind them, the office door closed.
The covered desk waited in the darkness.
It would be ready in the morning.
