Chapter Five: Divided Attention
Their game soon became a competition for Adrian’s attention.
During a quiet meeting, Mara extended one pointed shoe beneath the gap. Adrian pressed his lips to the polished leather.
“So responsive,” she murmured.
Elena raised an eyebrow. “You sound surprised.”
“I’m learning.”
“Try not to become overconfident.”
Elena redirected him with the toe of her Louboutin.
“My turn.”
Mara’s foot remained extended. “I wasn’t finished.”
“You have another meeting.”
“So you keep reminding me.”
Above the desk, they reviewed logistics. Beneath it, each woman silently reclaimed Adrian whenever his attention remained too long with the other. Mara slipped one foot from her shoe and offered the nylon-covered instep; Elena placed a heel into his palm and drew his face back toward her.
Adrian’s hand approached the signal point.
Both women became still.
The signal did not come.
Mara exhaled, disappointed and impressed.
Elena regarded her with quiet triumph.
“You’ll have to do better than that.”
At the door, Mara realized she had forgotten a folder. She returned, extended one heel beneath the panel and received a final kiss upon its pointed toe.
“Thank you,” she said.
It was impossible to tell which of them she meant.
