Chapter Three: The Secretary’s Discretion
Mara was told the truth the following afternoon.
The conversation lasted eleven minutes. Elena described the private arrangement without apology or embellishment. Adrian confirmed his agreement. Mara listened, asked three concise questions, and sat in thoughtful silence.
“You may decline,” Elena said.
Mara looked at Adrian, then at Elena’s Louboutins.
“I don’t believe I shall.”
Their first agreed meeting preserved the fiction that Mara knew nothing. She entered, sat and discussed Stockholm while Adrian waited beneath Elena’s desk.
The new rule was simple: if part of him crossed the panel, it belonged to whichever woman noticed first.
Adrian extended one finger.
Mara saw it immediately. Her right shoe drifted closer as she spoke about labour costs. The pointed toe brushed him. Its heel settled upon his finger.
She did not look down.
Elena leaned back, observing over steepled fingers.
“Stockholm has understated the figure,” she said.
“By three per cent,” Mara replied.
“Four.”
Mara increased the pressure.
“Three and a half.”
Their eyes met.
“Accepted.”
Mara’s pale complexion acquired the faintest colour. Someone proud and determined remained beneath her heel because all three had chosen it. The power moved through her with startling immediacy.
Adrian could withdraw.
He did not.
When the meeting ended, Mara kept him pinned while aligning her papers.
“You saw the opportunity,” Elena said.
“It would have been wasteful to let it pass.”
“And?”
Mara glanced at the darkness beneath the desk.
“I understand the appeal.”
