Having just finished USAF, bootcamp in sunny San Antonio, then Tech school for 19 weeks in Wichita Falls Texas. I got my orders for my ” permanent” duty station, although nothing is permanent in the military.

Report to Kelly AFB, San Antonio no later than. I had 10 days to report in and in process to the base, meet my 1st SGT, get permission to live off base then get everything set up.

It’s not normal for new unmarried Airmen to live off base, normally that’s reserved for E3 and up and i was only an E1.

So here I was 22 years old in a new city far from home, San Antonio’s a good five hour ride from Athens TX. The small East TX, town I grew up.

I found a nice one bedroom apartment off of 410 and Marbach road. Hell living in any city was new to me, but San Antonio was huge.

I could not believe my luck today. A friend of mine popped in to see me at work today and while we were sitting talking and have a drink in the refreshment area she happened to mention that her boyfriend had a bad back and that she walked on his back to help relieve the pain.

I’ve known her for about 4 years now and often thought about being under her feet, especially in her ankle boots that she was wearing today. They have about a four inch heel and small platform and are well worn. I sat on my back patio, my eyes teared up, the emotions of my recent divorce sometimes rear up. My divorce was finalized 6 months ago.

My wife of 26 years cheated on me with a younger guy, in better shape. I was completely blind sided, I thought everything was fine. Sure we had issues but nothing that we couldn’t work out.

I met my wife twenty seven years ago, I was in the USAF, I was on my 3rd year of a 4 year enlistment. I was 25 years old tall, skinny but toned. I admit I did look really young, so much so, I walked into a liquor store. I placed a bottle of Jack Daniels Black on the counter. Went to get a 12 pack of Miller, they had put the bottle back on the shelf. I ask what are they doing, was told your not old enough. I laughed and pulled out my license.

I was stationed at Kelly AFB, San Antonio, I loved the fact I was able to stay in Texas. Being from a small town in East TX, now being stationed in South TX, was heaven.

I spent a lot of time outside working our cows, hauling hay, riding my horse, and working on my hot rod truck, I was a young loner, preferred quiet over chaos, and honestly people usually let me down.

My name is Phil Sims, I’m 19 and live in a small town, I’m tall and thin, but surprisingly tone from years of ranch life.
