Starved Rock, Part 1 & 2 37 min read

The summer before my Senior year of High School I had a summer I will never forget. Most summers I spent working our small ranch in East Texas.

Mostly bottle feeding my calves, hauling hay, for dad and local neighbors around us. Most would buy 300-400 bales they needed picked up in the field, hauled and stacked on site. Was a lot of work but it paid good. Also kept me in great shape. I am tall and thin but nicely defined country life if tough.

I also worked on my horse JB, I was a team roper, I preferred being the heeler. I was pretty good, I became well known in across the state in TX

I had saved up some money, I sold my calves so mom and dad would not have to take care of them. Bottle feeding twice a day is not much fun, i also didnt want to dump my responsibility on my parents. I made extra cash buying 1 day old calves that momma died, she wouldn’t let the calf nurse, or the calf was just to dumb to find the teat.

My cousins in Illinois, from both mom and dad’s side had been after me for years to spend a summer with them. Kind of bouncing between relatives houses then come back for school. So I had saved up, cleared it with my parents and sold my cows. Dad was able to find a hand to cover my absence.

My older cousin Melia was waiting in the baggage claim are, she is 8 years older than me. Hey she Said and gave me a hug been what 10 years. Wow look at you she said your almost as tall as me.. I laughed in these boots I am as tall as you I’m 6’1.

So as we were driving to her place she told me, you can stay at my place for a few days. Then Granny wants to take you to Starved Rock. Ok I said no idea what a Starved Rock is.

I got a chance to see Most of my family on mom’s side over that week. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years but we live 1000 miles away not like we can just come visit anytime.

That Friday my Granny picked me up, we were tight. She is not your typical Granny, long story but her husband left her after 39 years of marriage. I don’t call him my Grandpa any longer he is really a sorry person. She was in a bad way didn’t even know how to write a check he took most of their savings and the good car and left her.

Granny, now free from the controlling husband, drinks Whisky, she smokes, she is loud, she cusses a lot. I just loved her she was so much fun to be around. We started toward Starved Rock, I asked her what is this place…

It’s a State park, legend has is one Indian tribe chased another tribe into the low part of the little valley. Then starved them to death for killing their Chief.

Oh wow I thought that’s crazy so what is there to do here. She explained it’s really nice they have a bunch of small lots people put small mobile homes or campers on the lot and you can only live there for spring and Summer.

Then the park closes till next spring, I have been spending the summer hear for several years know she told me.

A few hours later we drive into the park, I noticed a pool, a little store, laundry facilities, a huge covered Pavilion, several ponds I can’t wait to fish. And finally pulled into lot 106 Grannys..

I took both our suitcases in, then took my stuff to the guest room. And kind of sat on the porch just checking things out..

Granny told me go explore this is home for the summer. I took off walking, the park to learn my new surroundings. I had a good idea of the park layout walking in the woods off the trail Reminded me of home. The East Texas piney woods..

The next morning Granny told me, they have a dance every Saturday night, you should go. There are a lot of kids your age and she gave me a wink and 4 girls that are a little older than you, they are really cute and a lot of fun.

They would just eat you up. Trust me. Oh I don’t know Granny, I probably won’t much fit in around here, Texas is a lot different, but I have always chased older women. You know I’m shy, and I can only dance to country music.

I laughed yeah I wish, after the still painful break with Kristy and having been cheated on by the next relationship after, I’m a little gun shy. At first the dance floor was pretty empty, I had a couple of girls asked me to dance but I politely declined, told them I can’t dance to this kind of music, but I really appreciate the offer.

They were playing mostly 80s and 90s rock i really have two left feet I am terrible at dancing to anything but country.

I was sitting in my chair in my own little world. The dance floor was now getting a lot more crowded and suddenly these 4 girls walked to a spot just in front of me.

I noticed 4 beautiful older, well maybe 3 years older than me, barefoot girls started dancing right in front of me.
